ModerateCathedral Pines Reserve
Old-Growth Circuit
Distance
5.5 mi
Elevation gain
640 ft
Duration
2.5–3.5 hrs
Difficulty
Moderate
Wind through one of the last stands of old-growth white pine in the region. The trail is well-marked and the footing is mostly soft duff. Elevation comes in two short pitches; otherwise a mellow circuit. The cathedral-canopy feel at the loop's center is worth every step.
Highlights
- Old-growth white pine grove — trees up to 200 ft tall
- Two rocky outcrops with partial views east
- Interpretive plaques on old-growth ecology and logging history
Trail tips
- The trail is shadowy even on bright days; bring a headlamp if you start late.
- Bugs are intense in June — bug spray recommended.
- Cell service unreliable; download the map offline.
